BACK TO THE FUTURE By JACQUELINE L. AGATEP
GOING back to Filipino roots seems to be the design direction for Philippine interiors in 2010. With all that has happened to the country in the past year—all evoking patriotism—Filipinos are now keen on encapsulating what it is to be Filipino and make it known to the whole world. Two of the top interior design schools in the country, Philippine School of Interior Design (PSID) and Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) College of Architecture and Fine Arts, took on the trend, this time by fusing distinct Filipino elements with contemporary design to create trends which will shape the future of Philippine interior design.
KONTEMPO-PILIPINO For its 42nd year, PSID’s graduating class with the help of the National Commission for Culture and Arts (NCCA) mounted an interior design exhibit titled Kontempo-Pilipino which focused on contemporary living spaces inspired by our indigenous heritage.
Kitchen Even if you don’t love to cook, show kitchens are enough reason to own one. The kitchen has become the second living room. Colorful weave patterns, wood, sawali, rattan, and stone of the Ibaloi and beaded patterns and metalwork of the T’boli tribe were the focal points for these show-stopping kitchens.
Bed and Bath Ifugao-inspired baths, a Maranao princess-themed bathroom, weave patterns, ornate wood carving, and Mangyan alphabet carvings on the wall make for imaginative and inspiring intimate spaces.
Indoor and Outdoor Living Area Feminine lines, an age-old epic, warrior themes, and a seaside lanai take center stage for living area inspirations.
FILIPINO PLUS Pastillas de leche meets shabby chic or colonial Philippines meets Victorian. These are just some of the interior design themes showcased at PUP’s interior design exhibit. Dubbed Filipino Plus, the exhibit focused on Filipino themes adapted and merged with various art and design themes. |
