LIVING SMALL

GOT more stuff than space? Or is a small space cramping your style? Living small forces you to think and live creatively. Create more breathing space and amp your style with these space-saving ideas that wouldn’t leave you spaced out.

DE-CLUTTER YOUR LIFE
With ample space you can only live on what you need. Get rid of unnecessary clutter and stick with the essentials. You’ll be surprised by what you can live without.

FOCUS ON STORAGE
Think of ways you can store things without needing extra square footage. Store and organize items in creative storage spaces such as a old toolboxes, storage bins, or bauls that are perfect storage options for those extra clothes, shoes, CDs, and pocket books. Organize colorful boxes, storage bins, or suitcases in an exposed area that will not only store stuff but can be incorporated creatively into the design of your home.

THINK VERTICAL
Use as little floor space as possible and look high and look low. Make use of the wall space as much as you can. Building shelves and cabinetry is an easy way to make use of space and a useful solution for filling up your bare walls. Create the illusion of height or width with horizontal or vertical lines that you can paint on. Hang hooks, such as 3M Command’s array of hooks, clips, cords, picture hangers, and spring clips to hold pretty scarves or baskets that hold mail and receipts, change, or paper clips. Or try a more creative project by building drawers into your staircases and underneath your dining room table, or installing coat hooks onto the frame of a hanging mirror.

CONTRAST ENLIVENS AN INTERIOR
Use pattern and color to add interest and individuality. Add wallpaper, paint, and fabrics to make pieces new and interesting. Draw the eye to an accent piece like a colorful painting, poster, or special memento. Express your personality with a blanket or comforter that can be a decorative piece, too. Get crates and fill them with CDs, books, notes, and memorabilia. Personalize your space with posters, pictures, concert tickets, or varsity pennants.

LET THERE BE LIGHT
Paint your space with light colors to create a spacious and airy space. Use sheer curtains to let the light in. Hang mirrors in various walls. Invest in hanging lamps, table lamps, reading lamps, and pin lights to give your space an inviting glow. Clean your windows to let light filter through and make use of track lighting aimed at walls to free up floor space and create an expansive feeling.

SIMPLICITY HELPS A SMALL SPACE
Simple and clean lines create an illusion of a larger area. Versatile furniture is key to keeping things simple. Use moveable partitions or movable bookshelves. A sofa can also be a pullout bed or a clever storage space for your stuff. A futon instead of a bed can be rolled out of site in the daytime. Keep things of the same material and color and define spaces by using rugs, dividers, or curtains.
