Bright Thoughts
This Gloomy Season

THE RAINS are here! After the long, scorching summer, you’d wish the rains would stay, except that even just a drizzle brings back ugly memories of Ondoy, doesn’t it? Ooops, I’m being negative. Okay, let’s think positive-which is what this Wet, Wet, Wet Special is all about.

There are a number of reasons why we like the rainy season.

First, of course, is the fashion. You can layer up. Mix-matching tests your creativity and so it’s so much fun. I was in Melbourne last autumn and the cool climate allowed me to layer up which was, yes, fun. Speaking of thinking positive, Melbourne is one city which has turned some things we think as problems into solutions.

Now, back here in Manila, although it’s officially rain season, it doesn’t get really cold. So, the trick is to wear a cool blouse-light material, short sleeves, or sleeveless, then layer on a vest or shawl if the temp goes down, plus be ready with a coat, preferably with hood, for that sudden downpour. Get some new ideas from The Boutique, pages 19-23, and your favorite celebs.

This is also the time you can legitimately wear boots. Some girls wear boots during the hot season and think they’re fashionista. Please. This is Manila, not New York in winter.

Second, wet season means we’ll have less of the sun that damages the skin. But wait, that does not mean you stop your beauty regimen. Skin care expert Dina Stalder says beauty knows neither weather nor season. The rainy season, she adds, is the perfect time for cleansing treatments. Third, cold season is great loving season. Fourth, rainy season is soup and bread season. We have power combo recipes to keep you warm.

Now, we like this particular July because it’s Cats season. The Broadway musical is running this month at the Cultural Center with our Cover Girl, Lea Salonga, playing Grizabella. Ticket is P5,150-more affordable than if you have to go to New York to see the show.

Yup, there’s so much to rave about this time of the year. This month is also the start of excitement in the political arena as the administration of President Benigno Aquino III begins. For our country’s sake, we want him and the rest of the elected officials to succeed.

So, it may be a dark, gloomy, wet season. But, as I said, we are thinking positive. - Ed
