Spring/Summer 2009 The Stocks Are Down... So, Dress Up!
By JEZZA MARIE N. HAGUNOY
WHEN stocks go down, the Parisienne dresses up-that’s Marc Jacobs’ Spring-Summer 2009 statement for Louis Vuitton presented recently in Paris. The collection included tailored, intricately embellished pieces that swished and shimmered their way down the catwalk. Previous seasons juxtaposed rich and poor. This collection put rich with rich.
In a season of skirts, pants provided some standout looks: slouchy pyjama bottoms teamed with a shirt fabric bustier top with a gold Lurex stripe, while high-waisted pants in beige cotton jersey partnered a neatly tailored short-sleeved navy jacket, and wide-legged denim pants looked cool and crisp with a close-cut denim shirt. Shoes fused together the collection’s rich details and ethnic influences on sexy, spindly-heeled platform sandals with a play on strap and laces.
Bags came in rich mixes of materials with extravagant decorative details. A soft leather clutch with Stephen Sprouse’s iconic leopard prints was tied with a passementerie cord strung with beads, while the Monogram pattern shimmered in Lurex on supple, oversized bags in sumptuous shades of metallic leather.
DKNY pieces, meanwhile, are inspired by refreshing optimism and authentic New York style like its colored croc lace-up high platforms. Pastels dominate Mango’s Sandrina Fasoli collection, mixed with black as main tone. Kate Spade’s Beresford collection includes bags in super shiny patent leather for unprecedented sophistication and glamour. Yup, the recession is on, companies are closing shop, jobs are vanishing. Keep your job! Dress up!
