HALE BOYS DO FALL IN LOVE BY JEZZA MARIE N. HAGUNOY
ONCE there were four boys-next-door who wanted to express themselves through music. After barely a year, these boys-Champ Lui Pio, Roll Martinez, Sheldon Gellada, and Omnie Saroca (recently replaced by Join the Club’s Paolo Santiago)-now collectively known as Hale, conquered the music industry with smashing hits-Broken Sonnet, The Day You Said Goodnight, Kung Wala Ka, and The Leap of Fate, to name a few, becoming one of the country’s hottest bands.
Here, the band’s vocalist, Champ, and bassist, Sheldon, dish out on music, girls, and kissing on a first date.
MOD: How did you come up with the band’s name? Champ: Dictionary. It means sound in body and to pull. Sheldon: We wanted a name that would best define the music we play. We based most of our songs from our own experiences.
How was the group formed? C: In 2004, we were writing materials for a demo. Roll and Sheldon became classmates at the University of Sto. Tomas. That was the link for us to get together since Roll and I were friends.
Did anyone of you compose songs even before the band started? S: Yeah. Roll had a lot. C: We actually just consolidated existing materials when we all met.
Any favorite among all your songs? C: Blue Sky, Liham, Treehouse. We wrote these based on our experiences and they just get me nostalgic when I play them.
What makes Hale different from other bands? C: I think we’re just taller.
Are you guys all single? S: No.
What do you guys first notice in a girl? C: Looks, then brains, then beliefs. S: Physical assets.
Do you believe that first impressions last? C: Definitely! It’s always smart to give a good first impression.
Any date musts? C: Nope. Anything goes on a date. No preference, no requirements. S: Money.
Would you kiss the girl on your first date? C: If possible, why not? But I think it’s best to keep the mystery there and hold it for a little while. S: I try not to.
When can you say that a girl is ‘The One’? C: If she goes to church with me. S: I can’t.
What girl gestures make you kilig? C: Cooking for me or visiting me to spend time with me and my family. S: If I like the girl? Everything!
Sweetest thing that you have done for a girl? C: So many embarrassing stuff that I wish to forget. Ha-ha. S: I won’t specify, but I do things for her that I don’t usually do for others.
Do you consider dating a fan? S: Why not? C: Nothing is wrong with that as long as she can set aside the fan factor when we’re dating.
What word best describes you when you’re in love? C: Free. S: Cheesy…he-he-he.
What do you like in a girl? C: Fun, music lover, easy to get along with, and loves her family. Cliché, right?
What songs best describe your life right now? S: The Return of The Space Cowboy by Jamiroquai.
Hale’s third album, Above, Over, and Beyond, is still available in leading record bars.
